Every Fall, men around the world engage in a viral meme-gone-ritual called #NoNutNovember. This month-long show of will challenges men of all ages to avoid orgasm, or even masturbation and adult content; the latter is a virtuous stretch, but it's also far easier to stick to the gameplan if one avoids the habits that lead to a messy clean up in the first place.

The popularity of these orgasm-fasts and increased interest in semen retention for health and spiritual reasons in the past years speaks to a growing curiosity among men for practices that have long been part of men’s maturation and development for centuries. In asking why this is the case at our current moment, we find a deeper thread of wisdom, corruption and spiritual alchemy.

One thing to note is that most traditions around such chastity outside of Abrahamic religions or various priesthoods do not require strict abstinence from pleasure or intimacy, but rather offer timing calendars and strict conditions under which one could engage, ensuring that sexual energy was always converted into something potent and alchemical rather than something that drained and weakened a man. And amidst the cheapening of sensuality lies a secret tactic- take the vanguard of focus, intention, and structural action; the main group tasked with the embodiment of a culture’s masculine values, and make sure that instead of having the time, energy and moral direction to stand up for what is right in the present, and build the future as directed by the Feminine, they just sit at home, festering in dark corners of the internet being trained to hate women, but objectify them for hours on end while draining their own vital energy. The weaker they become, the less they stand for, and the more feeble their minds. The loop feeds itself.

Destabilized and retrained, the average man today has had within him implanted a hunger and dissatisfaction that is not only manufactured, but then in turn used to yank him this way and that, to lead him about like a bull with a nose ring. The deepest needs— to matter, to have purpose, to work towards something meaninful— all usurped in order to fuel The Machine and no matter what, they never resolve. Why? Because the demands society entraps men with in our shallow, fast-paced society are all pale substitutions of their deeper need for devotion.

As I’ve spoken about before, men are deeply prone to express themselves through externalized devotion, using it as a much needed disciplinary structure and the scaffolding for their acts of love and valor.
